Terracotta Warriors

The “Terracotta Warriors” series I created during my travels across China. I have long been fascinated by the country’s rich history and its striking contrast with rapid modern development.
Photographing the Terracotta Warriors was a powerful experience—at once mysterious, monumental, and intimate.
Discovered in 1974 near Xi’an, the Terracotta Army is considered one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Over 2,000 years old, these life-sized clay soldiers were buried in vast pits to guard the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, China’s first emperor. They were meticulously crafted, reflecting the diversity and skill of artisans from that time. The Terracotta Warriors stand as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a testament to China’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring legacy of its first emperor. Qin Shi Huang’s most significant achievements include the unification of China, the standardisation of writing, currency, weights, and measures, as well as the construction of an extensive network of roads, canals, and the early Great Wall to strengthen and defend the empire.
