In 1961, before a then-27-year-old Douglas Kirkland photographed Marilyn for LOOK magazine, she asked for just three things: champagne, Frank Sinatra records and silk sheets. What followed quietly transformed celebrity photography, replacing polished publicity images with portraits that felt candid, cinematic and deeply human.
Many of the photographs remain among the most recognisable ever taken of Marilyn, while the new edition also includes Douglas’s handwritten memories of that extraordinary evening.
