Each Carte Blanche has its exhibition and its book.The latest was designed by Whitepapierstudio and published by Filigranes. For this sixth year, the book “Les Joueurs” (The Gamblers) by Thierry Fontaine contains twenty-seven photographs and is prefaced by Bernard Blistène, Director of the National Museum of Modern Art and Serge Lasvignes, President of the Pompidou Centre with texts by Clément Chéroux (Curator of Photography at Beaubourg), Gilles Clément (landscape painter) and Benoît Cornu (Director of Communications at PMU).
We asked Patrick Le Bescont of Filigranes about the production of this new book.
“We have worked as publishers for the Cartes Blanches PMU for six years. This book is a little like a work in progress: at the beginning when we met togteher for the first time, the images didn’t even exist, we thought about the layout and the final production as a team: with the graphic design studio Whitepapierstudio, the PMU, Clément Chéroux and, of course, the winner. This relatively experimental side is exciting. Each book has a different conception, that of Thierry Fontaine is a book with a Swiss binding, the paper on which it was printed was different from the previous books: the layout is more dynamic and we chose a very glossy paper to bring out the colour in the images and particularly the gold. For the cover, the graphic designers submitted several proposals, and it was this one which immediately stood out for its strangeness and its enigma. It created a break from Thierry’s body of work.”
