YUBIN Taito-ku

In Tokyo, postal workers on their delivery rounds are first-hand witnesses to the ever-changing urban and social fabric. Adopting their perspective means rediscovering the city through a network of letterboxes of all kinds, related or not to the age and style of the buildings, and located on the blurry edges of public and private space. Born from my desire to renew the way I see the city where I have lived for twenty years, the “YUBIN” series (meaning “postal service” in Japanese) documents Tokyo from an imaginary postman’s point of view. Some mailboxes stand out clearly, others hide or blend into the background. By photographing them, I aim to capture micro-landscapes that, in their own quiet way, reflect the social and urban texture of the metropolis.

Published as postcard books, each edition focuses on a different Tokyo ward. The format offers a poetic and conceptual invitation to let these images travel through
the postal system. Each book also includes a small archival-quality triptych depicting postal delivery scenes, along with an extra postcard inviting readers to take part in a mail art project titled “YUBIN round-trip.”
