Sunlight, the Rhône delta, its vegetation, a few passionate cyanotypists, a botanist, a writer, and the many miles roaming the dunes and marshes, walking up and down the river banks throughout the seasons.
Cyanotyping involves placing an object on a sheet of paper sensitized with a mixture of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide, then exposing it to direct sunlight. The resulting image, characterized by a deep blue known as “Prussian blue,” reveals the object’s white negative, faithful to its actual size. This collection of plates, a true photographic and poetic exploration of the Camargue, provides a unique inventory of the region’s main remarkable plants, captured at the time of their flowering. To avoid having to pick these rare plants, the cyanotypes had to be made on site. This book offers an in-depth reflection on the major issues related to the preservation of this ecosystem.
