This image is taken from Michel Setboun’s third book about agencies. Eighty reporters were chosen to comment on one iconic image  taken during their careers. The image we’re publishing today is a picture by Samuel Bollendorff.

This photo was taken in China in 2006 for a report on coal mines in Shanxi province, where the living and working conditions are terribly dangerous. I wanted to show these farmers who migrate to find work and earn enough money to pay for their children’s school. These are the forgotten faces of the Chinese economic miracle.

” We turned this series into a web documentary, Voyage au bout du charbon. For the first time, I shot the series without support from the press, a sign of a serious crisis in the profession, but with the help of the Ministry of Culture. Also for the first time, an online newspaper, lemonde.fr, decided to publish a web documentary.”
