Zineland : Zines of the Zone

Preview

The roads and channels photography takes to reach the public still have a few surprises in store. There is concern, rightly so, about the digital photographs lost in the depths of some hard drive after only being seen once or twice. The concept of Zines of the Zone fights back against this premature oblivion.

It’s a mobile bookstore: a van filled with photo zines and books which traveled across 30 European countries in June 2014, meeting with readers and publishers. In addition to being a bookstore, Zines of the Zone is also a traveling exhibition whose pieces can be purchased. Founded by Julie & Hascoët and Guillaume Thiriet, photo school graduates joined by a dozen other members, the van rolled from festival—including Arles, among others—to bookstore, offering a map of the photo publishing world like some ancient trade route, its collection slowly dwindling while shedding light on rare projects (some of which can be viewed here).

Seeing the photographs of the different stops made by Zines of the Zone, we share in joy felt by both the public and the team, like a theatre troupe or a rock group and its roadies meeting their fans. Still today we can take pleasure in a newly developed photo. In its way, Zines of the Zone has revived that pleasure, making these pictures into a message from somewhere else.
