There’s something understated about We Are Here, a biannual travel magazine whose fourth issue will be released in June 2014. This might owe itself to the fact that it’s produced by just one person.

Conor Purcell is attempting to stretch the postcard format, something he’s already done in Dubai and Kathmandu. The layout is as simple as possible, illustrated with trivial photographs taken with his iPhone. We Are Here shows a city from a single person’s perspective, and his travels and encounters throughout it.

He doesn’t tell you where to eat, where to shop, where to walk. Contemplative and literary, the magazine is more about the resonance one finds, the echo one hears in the discovery and exploration of a place by an alert mind. The readers follows a dog on a walk, listens to a veteran of the Dubai night, peers out into an empty street, a field, the dark.

We Are Here is the patient notebook of a person who takes his time. The rhythm almost makes one forget that we can now spend mere weekends on the other side of the world, whereas not so long ago travelers would have to spend hours in one place to take a single photograph. Our relationship to time and photography has changed. We Are Here slows down that pace and gives us the desire to travel.
