Willis Hartshorn

Willis Hartshorn left the International Center of Photography last year for medical reasons. He moved to the country and resumed his passion, photography. He just launched his own website and sent us this message:

“I was trained as a photographer at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, and hoped to get a teaching job after graduate school so I would have the flexibility to do my own work. In 1980 I started teaching at ICP. That eventually led to five different jobs over 30 years. I never expected to be a curator, let alone a Director, but was very fortunate to work with photography and photographers.
Over time my work at ICP became a conflict of interest. I continued to make pictures, but they ended up under my bed. The website seemed an appropriate way for me to look back at my work, get it out in the world and encourage myself to do more.”
