Thierry Dreyfus

In Deauville, Thierry Dreyfus will be working with the light from the sky, but also artificial light, that he will attempt to master. He views landscapes at ground level, seeking a perception of space that is as expansive as possible. As he is also a lighting designer, he has been given free rein to bring the Chapelle des Franciscaines to life with light – a final, unprecedented performance before renovation works begin!

The echo of Thierry Dreyfus’s work lies elsewhere, in his collaborations with the world of fashion as a lighting designer for various fashion shows since 1983 (Versace, Jil Sander, Comme des Garçon, Acne, or Yves Saint Laurent’s last show in 2002) and in art installations produced for major events related to contemporary art (reopening of the Grand Palais in Paris, Borusan Contemporary Art Museum in Istanbul, and several Nuit Blanche in Paris and Versailles). Having mastered light for these ephemeral events, Thierry Dreyfus is also – yet very secretively for 25 years now – a photographer moved by one single purpose, obsession: capturing light! Photographing lights that he has not himself designed but which he has observed and that have moved him. Capturing and sharing the essence of light is his purpose in photography, a word whose literal meaning is“writing with light”. He thus captured Deauville’s light, whether it came from the sky or artificial in nature, looking at the landscape from ground level. And as a lighting designer, he was also given carte blanche to create a lighting project for the Franciscan Chapel, an original performance preceding the building’s renovation!
