The New York Times Portfolio Reviews : The Reviewers By Elizabeth Avedon

The Fourth Annual “New York Portfolio Review” sponsored by the New York Times LENS Blog and the City University of New York’s (CUNY) Graduate School of Journalism, took place over a recent weekend. Leading editors, museum curators, book publishers and gallerists reviewed the work of 150 or more photographers chosen out of over 2,500 applicants. All kinds of photographic work — from fine art to photojournalism — were included and the reviews are completely free for all photographers chosen to attend. From a Reviewers standpoint, the quality of the work is extremely high as the work has been screened by top photo professionals.

There are several creator’s, organizers, producers and supporters to thank for this event, including James Estrin and David Gonzalez, Co-Editors of The New York Times LENS Blog; Michele McNally, Assistant Managing Editor for Photography, The New York Times; Andrew L. Mendelson, Associate Dean, CUNY Graduate School of Journalism; Co-Producers Whitney Richardson and Laura Roumanos, Executive Director of United Photo Industries; and the LENS team.

On Saturday the portfolio reviews were for photographers 21 years and older. Sunday’s reviews were devoted to young photographers and students between the age of 18 and 27. They also received three very inspiring lectures with their portfolio reviews: “Multiple Markets for Photographers” with Mary Virginia Swanson, Executive Director of LOOK3 Festival of the Photography; “Virtual Reality: A  New Way To Tell Stories” with Jenna Pirog, Virtual Reality Editor at The New York Times Magazine; and “Personal Vision and Reinventing Yourself”, a discussion and slide-presentation with award-winning photographer, Maggie Steber

Mary Virginia Swanson also spoke about the upcoming LOOK3 Festival‘s incredible lineup with Nick Brandt, Graciela Iturbide, Yuri Kozyrev, Frans Lanting, Ruddy Roye and more. Sign-up soon. A complete list of Reviewers can be found on the NYTimes link below.
