In 2025, we celebrate the bicentennial of diplomatic relations between France and Brazil. This year, Brazilian photography was in the spotlight.
We celebrate it in turn with this day created for us by Marly Porto, whom we thank.
Photographers Bassul, Gui Christ, Flávia Sampaio, Paula Giordano, Sandra Gonçalves, and Pablo Pinheiro represent a diverse generation that is expanding the scope and power of contemporary Brazilian photography. Their works, each with their own unique language—whether documentary, aesthetic experimentation, or poetic exploration of the image—reveal fundamental aspects of the country’s culture, memory, and social transformations. Together, they contribute to consolidating photography as an autonomous and essential artistic field, providing new perspectives and strengthening the dialogue between national production and the international scene.
Marly Porto has been working in the field of study and research on Brazilian photography, its processes, practices, and theories for over 20 years. She is the Associate Curator of the Collection ” Un fonds photographique brésilien” at the Bibliotèque nationale de France (BnF), and is also responsible for the creation of the Photothings Festival in Brazil.
