Shanghai: Di Jinjun–Sophists

Preview

The OFOTO Gallery is currently presenting a photographer with a very promising future. Di Jinjun (b. 1978 in Shanxi Province) has chosen to go against the current of our era and its flood of digital photographs, using instead a 19th century process, wet collodion, to create a series of striking portraits entitled Sophists.

A sophist is a keeper of knowledge, which the sophist communicates orally in the way of the ancients. Who are the sophists in Di Jinjun’s portraits? Famous artists and musicians, internationally renowned curators, influential art critics, professors—all sages in the world of contemporary Chinese art. But these orators par excellence are here presented in silence; by definition, the medium of photography cannot communicate their thoughts. But the solemnity and the power of their faces reveals a kind of aura that instills reverence in the viewer.
