Santa Monica : Sebastião Salgado at the Peter Fetterman Gallery

Preview

Peter Fetterman Gallery will inaugure tomorrow a large-scale exhibition of prints by Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado (b. 1944).

Utilizing the entire gallery space and comprised of nearly seventy prints, the exhibition will showcase over three decades of work from Salgado’s illustrious career. Iconic images from his major bodies of work along with rare singular images from the gallery’s preeminent collection are curated to communicate the photographer’s powerful imagery within a retrospective context.

Sebastião Salgado is widely celebrated as one of the most important living photographers still active today and has been exhibited in international museums since the late 1970’s.
Often referred to as a “concerned” photographer, Salgado is a visual master of documentary imagery who has covered a wide array of pressing social issues through longterm reportages. The exhibition aims to provide a visual overview of Salgado’s vast oeuvre by highlighting key works from his most notable photographic series including his groundbreaking images of the Serra Pelada Gold Mines, the human toll of conflicts in Africa, and environmental devastation in the Oil Fields of Desert Storm Kuwait as well as new images from his most recent monograph, Scent of a Dream, documenting the faces and landscapes of the global coffee trade. Additional works from Salgado’s global, environmental project Genesis, which the Gallery last exhibited in 2013, will provide a full-circle presentation in juxtaposition with earlier, anthropological series.
