Meetings with Guillaume Herbaut by Sophie Bernard

Preview

Éditions Filigranes, directed by Patrick Le Bescont, has just published “Rencontres avec Guillaume Herbaut par Sophie Bernard”. This work is a conversation covering the career of the photojournalist, from his beginnings to today by way of his most emblematic series. This little book with an amethyst cover is part of the collection Photographers’ Words and has a preface by Michel Poivert.

In July 2011, when I first proposed to Guillaume Herbaut to do this book, I had already imagined it in the form of a long conversation and going on his journey, from his first photographic excitement to being seen as an artist. Why him? Because Guillaume Herbault was born in 1970 and he is one of those photojournalists who have contributed to the renewing of contemporary documentary photography. Why a conversation? Because it a form of narrative accessible to the greatest number that allows going in depth to the heart of the progress of the artist. The idea is put the spotlight on it as well as to analyse the choices and the decisions taken that led to the making of his photographs along the way. For these four years we saw each other with a more or less steady rhythm according to his professional activities. That is to say, very regularly for more than a year – a period when he didn’t have much work – and then much more spaced out, when his work became regular again. A total of about twenty interviews of about an hour and a half were recorded, transcribed and reorganised for consistency.
