Parvis Espace Culturel Leclerc – Pau : Stéphane Duroy : La vie à hauteur d’homme

Preview

A member of the VU’ agency since 1986, Stéphane Duroy has established himself as a keen observer of a battered world, an unyielding witness to a humanity crushed by poverty, wars, or sheer social fate. Born in 1948 in Bizerte, Duroy lives and works in Paris. He began at the SIPA agency before patiently shaping one of the most singular photographic bodies of work of recent decades.

From Great Britain to Berlin, and from Eastern Europe to the United States, he built four major bodies of work that form the backbone of a practice without artifice or compromise.

His career defies strict chronology and well-trodden paths. A photojournalist at first, he gradually moved toward a freer, documentary practice, where history is read as much in weathered faces as in the banality of an everyday life threaded with silent tensions. Duroy photographs both History with a capital H and fragments of life caught within their social context.

His exhibitions punctuate this atypical path: the Rencontres d’Arles in 1991 and again in 2024, the MEP in 2002, Le Bal in 2017. Each is a moment when his work—spare and stripped back—reveals to the public a rigorous gaze, yet one shot through with deep empathy. For in Duroy’s work, nothing is forced or a matter of pose. His precise framings, his silent images, open onto a reflection that asserts itself naturally.
For more than forty years, he has roamed Europe and the United States in search of the traces left by the dramas of the 20th century. Marc Bélit, the venue’s artistic director, tells us « At heart, what he photographs is man in his relationship to the world; man facing history, man confronted with the violence of reality, but also man persisting in living despite everything ».
Steeped in literature, history, and painting, his work is organized around three axes he claims as his own: the human condition, the weight of history, and—when history becomes unbearable—flight and exile as a last refuge.
