Preview

The Galerie Karsten Greve (Paris, Cologne, St Moritz) exhibit at Paris Photo Los Angeles an extensive solo show of the American artist Sally Mann.

The presentation includes selected photographs from the “Battlefields” series, made between 2000 and 2002, referring to various battlefields of the American Civil War (1861-65) that the artist started to visit in 2000.With large format landscapes Sally Mann recreates historical places, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Manassas – among others, pictures of dark and mysterious beauty. Abstract compositions that seem to be nearly night-pictures are created by the antique wet collodion technique – developed in the 1850s and similar to the one used for pictures during the American Civil War. The photographer creates a memory of historical events and real places that is directly transferred and seems to happen in the viewers imagination.

Born in 1951 in Lexington Virginia where she lives and works today, Sally Mann is one of the most important American internationally recognized photographers. Especially known for having made intimate portraits of her children in the “Immediate Family” series as well as delicate landscapes in the American South in “Mother Land” and “Deep South”.
