On the Road with Braschler/Fischer – Part 4

9th of April, Kabale-Mbarara Road, Uganda After South America we spend two days in Zurich before flying to Uganda. After a day of traveling by plane, we meet the ICRC in Kampala and have another strenuous day of driving ahead of us. We drive in a Red Cross Land Cruiser from Uganda’s capital all the way to the Southern border of the country.

9th of April, Kanaba, UgandarnNine hours after our departure from Kampala we reach Kisoro district which borders Rwanda and Kongo. Shortly before our arrival in the town of Kisoro we run across a cow that seems to be enjoying the spectacular view of the scenery with the Muhabura volcano in the back as much as we do.
-
10th of April, Kisoro, UgandarnWe have travelled to Uganda to visit the Nyakabande Transit Center with the ICRC. Every day Congolese refugees arrive in this camp who are fleeing the civil war in their home country. They stay there for a week or two before being transferred to permanent refugee camps.
-
10th of April, Kisoro, UgandarnWe shoot a portrait of Noela with her twin boys Israel and Reponse. Noela decides to flee Congo after her husband was the only survivor of an attack on the mini bus he was riding on his way home from the local market.

10th of April, Kisoro, UgandarnMathias interviews Muhawe with ICRC delegate Oliver. The 14 years old boy arrived in the transit center a few days ago. He has lived all his life in a small town in Congo not too far away from the border. He tells us how shooting started outside his school one morning last week and how the teacher had told the students to run away. He had run for his life and finally ended up in this transit center in Uganda all by himself. He is one of many unaccompanied minors that are ending up in refugee camps.

10th of April, Kisoro, Ugandarn25 years old Francine has fled Congo as well with her family. She saw no point in staying in Congo only to wait until the situation would get even worse. She rather staysinaprovisionalcampwhereatleastthesafetyofherfamilyisguaranteed. t

9th of April, Kisoro, UgandarnWhen we went to the u201cCoffee Potu201d for dinner we had not expected a candle light dinner. But as so often in this part of the world the power goes out and so we are having our meal in romantic atmosphere. Nothing new for Rena who has been working as an ICRC delegate for over a year in Uganda.
-
11th of April, Kisoro, UgandarnBefore our departure from the Nyakabande Transit Center ICRC delegates Rena and Oliver are checking the latest refugee statistics with a local Red Cross volunteer. Each day 50-100 Congolese refugees arrive in Kisoro. Should the situation on the other side of the border further deteriorate, that number could multiply.

12th of April, Buwama, UgandarnOn our long drive back to Kampala our driver stops every now and then at local markets to do some grocery shopping. A heavy bag of potatoes, dozens of eggs, and some other products end up in the trunk of our Land Cruiser. Food products are way cheaper in the countryside than in Uganda's capital. Our last stop is at the meat market in the small town of Buwama where he buys enough steaks for his big family to live of it for at least a week.

12th of April, Entebbe, UgandarnWe are not so lucky at Entebbe Airport. An overzealous representative of Kenya Airways doesn't believe us that our fully flight approved Profoto lithium batteries can fly with us as they do all year long. He goes at great length to study all his regulations only to state in the end that these batteries wouldn't be allowed on board. After a long and heated debate we finally are forced to have one battery sent with Fedex while we manage to smuggle the second one in our carry on bag.
