New York: The Fence –United Photo Industries

Preview

The new United Photo Industries, Photo District News and Brooklyn Bridge Park exhibition project, THE FENCE, runs 1000ft throughout Brooklyn Bridge Park and features some of the most interesting documentary photography around right now. Fifty or so photographers, organised by theme and put to public vote (http://fence.photovillenyc.org/f-2013/brooklyn/). The Fence also expanded to boston and was unveiled last month as part of the flash forward festival and runs along the rose F. Kennedy Greenway.

Not an easy choice! In ‘People’ we have Ilona Szwarc’s rodeo girls, Matt Black’s Californian sharecroppers and Mika Goodfriend’s Pompano Beach Quebecois retirees. ‘Play’ sees cinematographic mise-en-scène from Sam Comen and Don Hamerman’s found baseballs. ‘Creatures’ includes documentary work from Radhika Chalasani (guide dogs trained by prisoners) and more conceptual material: Claire Rosen’s parrots on vintage wallpaper and Alexis Pike’s shots of paintings of reindeer found on Idaho houses. ‘Streets’ focuses on out-of-control urbanisation: witness Alejandro Cartagena’s crammed pick-ups on Mexico City’s suburban highways and Natan Dvir’s oversized advertising hoardings. In ‘Home’ Matthieu and Mareile Paley explore the hostile lives of the Kyrgyz.

In a separate project, united photo industries teamed up with the new york road runners to celebrate the brooklyn half marathon in may and reached out to 10 photographers. The exhibition offers a tour throughout Brooklyn in Prospect Park (Jamel Shabaaz), Brighton Beach (Emine Ziyatdinova), Bedford Stuyvesant (Russell Frederick), and all around (Arlene Gottfried).
