Out and About

MoP 2013 is off to a fantastic start. Our third biannual this year is triple the size of 2011. There are over 180 photography museum galleries and art spaces exhibiting photography in Denver and the region. Over 250 events which includes the standard photo festival fair, international exhibitions, lectures tours portfolio reviews, work shops and parties almost all free to the public.

I started MoP in 2005 inspired primarily by the amazing Fred Baldwin and Wendy Watriss of the Houston Fotofest and Chris Rauschenberg of Photolucida who in turn were inspired by Les Rencontres d’Arles. Denver is but a small beginning of what those amazing events are, but we are growing. Denver is in the mist of an arts groundswell. There is a extraordinarily large photographic community emerging in Colorado.  Young and old photographic community  join together to support fine art photography.  Not east coast not west coast but its own unique brand of a artistically vibrant community that celebrates art. Its a rise of the creative class. My hopes are the world will take notice.

I love curating .. be it, on the Internet, with a salon group, a gallery show, or with the Month of Photography and a city full of exhibitions. I love stirring up groups for the community and gaining momentum where the end product is something grand for all. The Internet and a laptop are amazing tools one can use to bring the world closer with photography. Everybody asks how I do it. It is simple really, delegation is the key to success. Each gallery, museum, art center and coffee house work towards a common goal. Seeing the power of this happening is intoxicating and its very exciting for everyone. Power in numbers.

These are my snapshots of the first fifteen days of the two month festival. Its is but a small sliver of the fun and art going on in our own little Arles in the Rockies.
