Mois de la Photo 2014 : Carlos Perez Siquier at the Galerie Tagomago

Preview

A pioneer of avant-garde photography in Spain, Carlos Pérez Siquier is one of the founders of the group AFAL (Agrupación Fotográfica Almeriense), created in 1950, as well as the eponymous revue. Published between 1956 and 1963, the revue features Spanish and foreign photographers representative of their time.

La Chanca, his first first series, which Siquier shot in the 1950s in the poor neighborhoods of the coastal city of Almeria, is an important humanist document of postwar Spain. Beginning in the 1960s, he experimented with the potential of color, which culminated in La Playa, a series of portraits and beach scenes of the 1970s, where irony, fragmentation and eroticism merge to form a pop-accented aesthetic reminiscent of Martin Parr.
