During the 1980s and for nearly 15 years, Michael Kenna photographed the sites of the former Nazi camps. He donated this work to France. His photographs highlight the shadow of the Nazi camps, lest they be forgotten. Far from obscuring the horrors that occurred in the concentration camps and killing centers, Michael Kenna immerses us, through his art, in the immensity and emotion of these places where humanity suffered. He photographed the six centers where people were killed and all the main sites of the concentration camp system, even the most forgotten. He did so as he found them 50 years after their discovery in 1945, and his photographer’s eye offers us a striking view of these seemingly innocuous remains with vast landscapes that bear witness to them. Echoing the Memorial’s museum tour, twenty-four photographs by Michael Kenna are presented in this exhibition produced with the National Resistance Museum Network.
