Mami Kiyoshi

Preview

I’m interested in stories, which are always told by someone, whether the story is a myth, a tale or an anecdote. Photography allows me to plumb the depths of personalities and their surroundings to recreate stories. I try to make the models look like Buddhas, primitive gods or heroes.”

This is how Mami Kiyoshi describes her exhibition at the Galerie Annie Gabrielli. The exhibition is accompanied by photographs taken in Japan during the Meiji era (1868-1912), when Japan was opening itself up to Western influences. These “tourist photographs” are the first photographic representations of Japan taken by Europeans like Felice Beato, Raimund von Stillfried and Adolfo Farsari.
