« L’Envers du monde » highlights the experiments of the duo of artists Anne-Lore Mesnage and Charles De Borggraef. Since 2022, they have been traveling in the Vercors France in a caravan transformed into a camera obscura. Using this giant pinhole camera, they create monumental film works as they travel.
Their approach consists of literally immersing themselves in the landscape: the image is projected inside their vehicle, completely enveloping them in this space-time of luminous projection that they call “the lair-landscape”: each shot is experienced from the inside, by a manual and patient process, imposing itself in counterpoint to the frenetic pace of popular photography. Their approach, refined and sincere, highlights the natural heritage, revealing the natural composition of the places, without superfluous ornaments. In the manner of documentary photography, the analog works captured from the caravan are a slow witness to the authenticity of the landscapes of this territory, and their grandeur. A creation that they share on the roads, with the inhabitants, who in turn experience this lair-landscape.
The exhibition at Lux invites visitors to follow the artists’ odyssey, to embark on a journey across the plateau, to confront its cliffs and its immensity, sharing behind each photograph the challenges they encountered. Conceived as an immersive sensory experience, the scenography is built around René Daumal’s work Le Mont Analogue, like the ascent of an imaginary mountain that has become the metaphor for an inner quest, fraught with pitfalls, successes, but also failures and accidents to be mastered.
This project follows a major commission from the Department of the Sublime Routes of the Vercors, in close collaboration with the Heritage Conservation Department.
