Lola Alvarez Bravo at Maison de l’Amérique latine

Preview

Until 12th December the Maison de l’Amérique Latine is presenting the first exhibition in France dedicated to the work of Lola Álvarez Bravo (1903-1993), one of the most important Mexican photographers of the 20th century. She was a face of the artistic renaissance that followed the Mexican Revolution in 1910, like Tina Modotti, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Manuel Álvarez Bravo, whom she married in 1928 and with whom she lived until 1934.

She devoted most of her professional career to documentary work, mainly for Mexican government agencies, at a time when few women could aspire to work in an activity that required as much personality as independence.

Also a portraitist, she photographed famous painters for the collection of the National Institute of Fine Arts, and more widely from the worlds of Mexican art and culture. She taught at the San Carlos Academy, set up a studio and founded the Gallery of Contemporary Art, where she organised the only personal exhibition dedicated to Frida Kahlo during her lifetime. Between 1920 and 1980 she built up a photographic work that is highly respected today for its quality and interest.

The exhibition at the Maison de l’Amérique Latine was first shown at the Circulo de Bellas Artes de Madrid,as part of PhotoEspaña 2015, together with a collection of prints drawn from the photographic collections of the Fondation Televisa – original prints and proofs dating from 1992.
