‘Les formes du chaos’ by Jean Gaumy

Preview

Until April 3rd, the Matmut Centre for Contemporary Art is hosting and exhibition bringing together the works of two photographers: Les Formes du Chaos by Jean Gaumy and Derrière les Apparences by Camille Doligez.

Jean Gaumy is showing two of his new photographic series, Arctic and Cliffs for the first time. They follow on naturally from D’après Nature which he published in 2010 with the publishing house Xavier Barral.

Here there are large colour prints of ice and of rocks of a desert-like universe. They are doubles of some amazing preliminary sketches made in black and white with a smartphone, which he has used for years as a visual notebook.

Through his framing the photographer tries to destabilise his own view, and ours, too. He leads us without preference from the formations of the Normandy cliffs, hardened over tens of millions of years, to those that are unstable in the frozen wastes of the Arctic.

At the heart of this primitive matter he tries to get close to the feeling of silence and the original perception that he has looked for, obstinately, for years.
