Le BAL: From the Witness Era to the Object Era

Preview

Eyal Weizman is an architect, professor and the director of the Center for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths College at the University of London. Since 2001, he has served as the head of Forensic Architecture, a multidisciplinary research laboratory investigating the consequences of societal conflicts and human rights violations.

What is forensic architecture?

Forensic architecture is a response to the urbanization of war. Conflicts occurring around the world mostly take place in cities: buildings, infrastructure, bridges—anything an architect is responsible for, which can be proof of the violence inflicted on cities. The discipline is recent. We developed it from the overlap between archeology, engineering and media analysis… Most of our material comes from the people being afflicted by this violence. Today the city is highly visible in the media.
