La Galerie Rouge : Hommage Agathe Gaillard

Preview

Until September 27, La Galerie Rouge, formerly the Agathe Gaillard gallery, pays tribute to her with these images and this text.

Exactly 50 years ago, on June 10, 1975, Agathe Gaillard opened in Paris, with the support of her husband Jean-Philippe Charbonnier and her photographer friends, the first gallery dedicated solely to photography. Thanks to her passion for the medium, her sure taste, and her unwavering support for photographers, she worked tirelessly for greater artistic recognition of photography. She also made of the 3 rue du Pont Louis-Philippe a legendary venue for photography enthusiasts. A strong and uncompromising personality, deeply loyal to the photographers she discovered or supported, Agathe will be missed by us, as she will be missed by the artists, the public, and the collectors who became passionate about photography thanks to her.

To pay tribute to her, we wanted to create a special display dedicated to Agathe at 3 rue du Pont Louis-Philippe, a place she promoted for so long in the service of artists.

We have selected a few prints from the many photographers she supported throughout her career. You will have the pleasure of seeing: Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Claude Batho, Édouard Boubat, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Jean-Philippe Charbonnier, Luc Choquer, Robert Doisneau, Sandra Eleta, Jean-Pierre Évrard, Louis Faurer, Ralph Gibson, André Kertész, Erica Lennard, Marie-Paule Nègre, and Colette Urbajtel.

Excerpts from Agathe Gaillard, Mémoires d’une Galerie, Gallimard, Paris 2013:
“I don’t know if all the joyful guests on that June 10th, 1975, believed as much as I did in the future of this company, but at that moment they were happy. They had something in common: they truly loved Photography.”
