Jorge Ribalta–L’image et sa fonction

Five Questions for Jorge Ribalta from Chantal Grande

You use photography like an instrument for analyzing, observing and arranging the cultural models of our society. How are you developing this documentary project, this archive produced from often minor events, which the viewer must reconstruct and interpret through a multitude of images?
J. B: My work relies on a examination and a highly literal application of sources of the prevailing views of 1930s documentary work, those according to which the photographer can explain society in all its complexity, representing the daily life of the worker, the “man in the street.” Sergei Tretyakov is my most important reference, with his views on the seriality and immobility of the photograph, which articulates dialectical-materialist thoughts about the social and political function of the photograph.
