Gilles Saussier, Rue Méandre – 2001 / 2012 VOSTEng par CNAP

Gilles Saussier was born in 1965 in Suresnes, in France. He was initially a photojournalist  he then turned his back on this kind of work at the end of the 1990s. Since then Gilles Saussier’s projects have intertwined the genres of documentary photography and conceptual art.

In 1997 Saussier’s first personal exhibition took place in  Shakhari Bazar in the city of Dhaka in Bangladesh. For it he threw himself into the daily lives of the city’s inhabitants and started this documentary project that cut him off completely from his former profession. With Rue Méandre, a large photographic montage acquired by CNAP in 2012, Saussier tries to overcome the limits of photography, to reconstitute his experience on a human scale. This assemblage testifies to the real documentary experience that he has created.

Thanks to Pascal Beausse, head of the photographic collections, and to the teams of the Centre National des Arts Plastiques who have allowed this project to be carried out. Coordination: Annabelle Oliveira, Communications and Information at CNAP. Assisted Zelie Davin, Responsible for acquisitions photography, video, audiovisual and new media Cnap.
