Pavel Wolberg, Qalqilya Checkpoint – 2002 VOSTeng par CNAP

Pavel Wolberg was born in 1966 in Leningrad (today called Saint Petersburg) in Russia. At the age of 7 he emigrated to Israel with his family. Today he lives and works in Tel Aviv. He works as a photojournalist. The resources that he has built up through his practice, as well as his experience, have allowed him to develop his work as an artist.

Qalqilya Checkpoint,, a photograph made in 2002 and acquired by CNAP in 2012, reflects this duality, between reportage and artistic photography. This image produces what we can call “counter-information”, information that sows the seeds of turmoil. Indeed, with this image, the artist goes against the codes of media photography, he attempts to find a simpler way of approaching the reality of human relations, as expressed here by these two characters.

A solo exhibition of the work of Pavel Wolberg at the Negev Museum of Art in Be’er Sheva in Israel has just ended.

Thanks to Pascal Beausse, head of the photographic collections, and to the teams of the Centre National des Arts Plastiques who have allowed this project to be carried out.
