IBASHO : Miho Kajioka : ‘so it went, goes, and will go…’

Preview

IBASHO presents the second solo exhibition by Miho Kajioka, building on her artist book series so it goes. Kajioka began the series in 2018, exploring her perception of time while subtly disorienting the viewer in a poetic and amusing way.

Through her intuitive photographs, Kajioka plays with the concept of time in different ways. For this exhibition, she shares installations that question the chronological sequence of events.

Kajioka became especially interested in the theme of time after reading Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaugtherhouse-Five. Like Vonnegut, Kajioka wonders whether the order of time is always in the same chronology, or if the sequence of past, present and future changes?

“Maybe sometimes tomorrow comes before today.
Or maybe one minute is sometimes longer than a week.
Or can time have a smell?

I have always been fascinated by the sense of time, ever since I was a little girl.”
– Miho Kajioka

Her book so it goes won the Prix Nadar in 2019. Following that, Kajioka, IBASHO along with the(M) èditions published three more books in this series. The exhibition features images from the existing four books, as well as unreleased images.

Kajioka skilfully creates poetic and suggestive unique works through alternative printing methods. Her images evoke a sense of mystery in her constant search for beauty. Through a focused and respectful approach to photography, Kajioka evokes the tradition of Japanese photography that is characterised by the culturally Japanese sense of beauty: wabi sabi. Wabi has been described as ‘serene attention to simple things’ and sabi as ‘beauty acquired through the patina of time’.

The exhibition so it went, goes, and will go… will be on view from 14 May to 2 August 2026 at IBASHO in Antwerp. The vernissage will take place on Thursday 14 May (Ascension Day), coinciding with the start of Antwerp Art Weekend (14–17 May). During that weekend, opening hours are 12:00–21:00 on 14 May and 12:00–18:00 on 15, 16 and 17 May.

On 15 and 16 May at 16:00, an artist talk and signing session with Miho Kajioka will take place, during which she will speak about her artistic process.

Miho Kajioka (b. 1973, Japan, lives in Paris) studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and began there as a painting major, but little by little turned to photography. She finished her fine arts degree in Montreal, Canada. However, she began her career as a journalist, producing TV news and documentary programs for foreign news outlets, and didn’t produce art for more than 10 years. It was after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that Kajioka was reconnected with her photographic art. Two months after the disaster, while reporting in the area, Kajioka found roses blooming next to a blasted building. That mixture of grace and ruin led her to create art that celebrates beauty in daily life. Kajioka’s work has been exhibited in multiple countries in the EU as well as the UK and USA.
