Gumnut Gestures

The gumnut is a modest, often overlooked part of the Australian landscape. These seed capsules from eucalyptus trees fall quietly to the ground, where they lie unnoticed among leaves and bark. Yet, when viewed closely, each one possesses a distinct character and a unique form.

The photographs in Gumnut Gestures began with a simple curiosity. While walking in the bushland and parks near my home in Victoria, I started collecting fallen gumnuts to bring back home. Placed against a neutral background and lit simply, their shapes began to suggest something beyond their botanical origins. Each one seemed to hold a specific gesture: a bow, a reach, a momentary pause, or a shared connection with another form.

I chose a minimalist approach, allowing the gumnuts to stand alone or in small groups so their natural structure could speak clearly. Their curves and textures create subtle expressions that feel almost human, though the objects remain entirely as they were found—unaltered and unreshaped.

These images are not intended as scientific studies. Instead, they explore how familiar natural objects can reveal an unexpected personality when we slow down to look. While Australia is often defined by its vast horizons, I am drawn to the small details found underfoot. In these weathered seed pods, I found a surprising grace and individuality.

Gumnut Gestures invites the viewer to pause and notice the character held within these ordinary fragments of the Australian bush. The work sits somewhere between nature study and quiet portraiture.
