Spanish artist, author, and photographer Ruth Baza has donated two previously unpublished black‑and‑white portraits of Friedensreich Hundertwasser to the Hundertwasser Foundation (Vienna), where they have now become part of the official archive and digital gallery.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928–2000) was one of the most singular European artists of the 20th century: a painter, visionary architect, and pioneer of environmental activism long before the term existed. Decades before contemporary figures such as Greta Thunberg popularized ecological debate, Hundertwasser was already advocating for sustainability, biodiversity, and aesthetic responsibility as essential pillars of everyday life.
Known for his reserved nature and for being a difficult figure to interview or photograph, Hundertwasser agreed to speak and pose for Ruth Baza during a personal meeting at the Kunsthaus Wien in January 1997. At that time, Baza was already an established author and correspondent with a recognized career dating back to 1990.
In Ruth’s words: “Hundertwasser and I shared the same way of understanding beauty, nature, and creative freedom. We were also united by a sensitivity toward ecology, recycling, and simple living, which made our conversation flow naturally from the very first moment. That is why we understood each other so well. Being able to contribute something to his legacy now is an honor.”
