The Palestinian photojournalist Ali Jadallah, based in Gaza, won first place in the Portfolio (Story-Telling) category at the 2025 HIPA Awards with his series titled Burden of Survival.
For more than ten years, Jadallah has been documenting life in the Gaza Strip, capturing the conflict as part of the daily lives of its inhabitants. His work seeks to show the impact of violence and the destruction of homes, in a tradition of photojournalism that candidly depicts the experiences of civilians.
In his series Burden of Survival, he photographs scenes of mourning, displacement and endurance: wounded or bereaved people, children, queues amid the rubble. These images reflect both the immediate trauma of the attacks and the daily struggle for survival. Jadallah’s personal history is intrinsically linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Living in Gaza before the conflict, Ali Jadallah lost family members when his home was destroyed and, despite the opportunity to leave Gaza, he chose to stay and continue to bear witness to the war. His commitment has earned him several international awards. In addition to the HIPA Award, in 2025 he received the Grand Prize for Culture and Arts from the Turkish Presidency for photography. He has also been recognised in competitions such as World Press Photo and the Siena International Photo Awards.
