Gary Calderwood 5 Days in NYC

I am 65 years old and for 55 of those years I have thought of myself as a photographer. I am a classically trained photographer, BFA, and studied with two zone system masters, Minor White and Ansel Adams. Aesthetically, my inspiration was from the greats such as Bruce Davidson and Pete Turner.

After a 15 year career as a location photographer for advertising, annual reports and hotel and travel, I opened a gallery in Philadelphia specializing in my other passion, 20th century French decorative arts, and photography.

I have continued to shoot film and make my own fiber based prints. Although I liked to work in color, I was never happy with the print results. I wanted to try digital, but being a street shooter used to rangefinders and compact slrs, I found the digital slrs ungainly and the compacts had no viewfinder. Three months ago, I finally found a compact digital with a viewfinder and here is a small sample of the great fun I’ve been having. When I am shooting color, color is as much the subject as what is represented. New York is a fantastic subject and was a perfect way to start a new adventure.
