In early April 2018, we received an email from Michael Tighe, a US West Coast celebrity photographer. He announced his desire to retire to Baja California and to do so: sell his prints at a preferential price. The idea seduced us and we announced the sale in order to help him. It was a success! Thus, we wish to continue this approach: offering photographers who are out of the traditional circuits, who do not have galleries, agencies or auction houses to propose, through the Eye of Photography, the sale of a series of singular works – in exchange of a measured commission. We will never substitute for galleries and other distributors, we will never take care of production or distribution. We will remain a gateway.
Today, we present the images of Claude Guillaumin, a French photographer who is particularly acclaimed in the world of fashion photography. He was an assistant to Irving Penn in New York and later worked with the greatest fashion and beauty magazines such as Elle, Cosmopolitan, and Glamour, then for the great brands like Chanel, Clarins and also L’Oréal.
The woman, this “wonderful being”, is inescapable in Claude Guillaumin’s work. In a profession where each body and each face is controlled but dehumanized, a different approach allows the artist to be differentiated from his colleagues: the desire to show the soul of his models, to reveal their true selves, their individuality.
Beyond being beautiful, Claude Guillaumin wants the women he photographs to have “character”, to be animated and unique. Always bringing a strong human dimension to his work, the artist envisages photography more fundamentally s a means of opening the eyes to the world, nature and its people.
