Espace DUREV : Douglas Kirkland : Romance

Preview

The Espace DUREV exhibition brings together a selection of around twenty photographs from Romance, the recent book, edited by Françoise Kirkland and Sarah Menahem, presenting some of Douglas Kirkland‘s most iconic photographs. This new book brings together images of famous and unknowns couples. Conceived as a “love letter” from Françoise Kirkland to Douglas Kirkland, this work embodies the great romanticism and joie de vivre of his work.

It features cinema legends such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and more, along with images from cult films (Out of Africa, Moulin Rouge), as well as previously unseen photographs.

On November 13, a closing ceremony will be held at the gallery, with a book signing in the presence of Françoise Kirkland and Sarah Menahem.

As director Baz Luhrmann noted: “Douglas’s images exude a great humanity, creating a certain intimacy; they have romance.”

Douglas Kirkland (1934–2022) joined Look magazine in his early twenties, then Life Magazine during the golden age of photojournalism in the 1960s and 1970s. His many assignments included reporting in Greece, Lebanon, and Japan, as well as fashion and celebrity portraiture, including Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marlene Dietrich.

Over the years, Kirkland has worked on over 100 film sets, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Sound of Music, Out of Africa, Titanic, Moulin Rouge, Australia, and The Great Gatsby.

His photographs have been exhibited internationally and are included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, Australia, the National Portrait Gallery in London, Eastman House in Rochester, the Houston Center for Photography, and the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles.

He has received numerous accolades, including the President’s Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Cinematographers, a Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment Photography from the IPA, and an Award of Excellence from the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles, in recognition of his exceptional career.
