Elene Usdin –In praise of self portrait

Elene Usdin is a walking toolbox. She draws, paints, and for the past nine years, has taken pictures, too. Smiling and considerate, she’s also great company. At 40, this young mother sews and knits with ease. We’re not sharing this personal information to embellish her personal ad, but to show the breadth of her talent.

A toolbox can double as a box of ideas. She can turn any room into a David Lynch film set, any park into an enchanted forest, or fill an entire space with two or three pieces of strings. Endowed with an overactive imagination, Elene Usdin knows how to do almost everything and does it well. But her most adept talent might be self-portrait. She has a statuesque body that she doesn’t hesitate to show off. And by taking herself as a subject, she avoids the fracas of casting calls, agents and lookbooks, saving time and money to boot. What’s more, it’s good for her: never underestimate the therapeutic virtues of self-portraiture.
