Eakins Press Foundation publishes Lisette Model: The Jazz Pictures, a collection of never-before-seen works by the renowned American documentary photographer and educator.
A former pianist who studied under avant-garde composer Arnold Schoenberg, Model spent over a decade documenting Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and countless other luminaries of America’s 1940s and ’50s jazz scene—a particularly courageous feat considering the genre was under increasing political scrutiny and Model herself was on the McCarthy-era National Security Watchlist for purported connections to Communism.
Lisette Model: The Jazz Pictures presents nearly 200 of these candid, effusive prints and negatives, the majority of which have remained unseen until now. Also included in this clothbound volume is an accompanying text by Langston Hughes, written for the original book project that Model was forced to shelve due to encroaching political pressure. In addition, Harvard Art Museums’ Curator of Photography Audrey Sands examines the societal and cultural pressures that influenced Model, inspired a generation of musicians and activists, and produced one of the most important—and underappreciated—bodies of work in midcentury American photography.
