This publication, Revue, is the work of the photographer Nicole Tran Ba Vang.
Here it is with her presentation text.

Drawing on the stereotypes and prejudices of mass media, I revisit their many facets by manipulating their codes. In the spirit of the Surrealist poet Joyce Mansour, I adopt the media posture of advertising and fashion magazines. With contributions from writers, philosophers, critics, artists, and art historians, Revue subverts and reflects back on the cultural and aesthetic codes of mass media, inviting us to explore the consumerist fantasies of an image‑based society and to question how popular culture is represented and how it influences our tastes, values, bodies, and minds.

Revue is an artist’s book that hijacks the media, cultural, and aesthetic codes of fashion magazines. Its table of contents proposes sections that stand in for the usual magazine menu. It is a project grounded in appropriation and détournement. It includes works that pirate advertising photographs; quotations from artists, philosophers, and writers take the place of beauty and shopping tips…

Many authors collaborated on Revue, among them Marie Darrieussecq, Françoise Gaillard, Cécile Godefroy, Guy Limone, Michel Nuridsany, Jérôme Sans, and David Zerbib.

“As with any form revisited—or ‘reviewed’—by Pop Art, I draw heavily on popular culture, advertising, and magazines, where stereotypes and prejudices circulate. What is our aesthetic room to maneuver? To what degree are we alienated by the models imposed on us through the media? Revue examines representations of the popular culture of appearances while also questioning the media’s power over our tastes, values, bodies, and minds. Revue acts like a detox for the mind and encourages readers to reconsider how they look at what they are usually invited to desire. As in all magazines, Revue begins with a minute of advertising—except I have turned it into an infusion rich in antioxidants with health benefits, notably in combating allergies and sleep disorders.”
