A former lawyer, Debi Cornwall quit pleading for the defence to go into photography but without giving up her areas of investigation. Her latest project? Guantānamo Bay and its sadly famous prison, which she put into pictures while submitting to the censorship and rules of the army. And the result “Welcome to Camp America”, winner in the Liangzhou International Festival of Photography in China. It’s divided into three parts: the places where the soldiers and the prisoners live and relax, the souvenir shop at the camp, and portraits of the released prisoners. A disturbing exploration of all the facets of this place of non-law, which Barack Obama promised to close but his promise went unheeded.
