Chanel by Willy Rizzo

Preview

Willy Rizzo “had” all the stars, or just about. From Marilyn to Bardot, from Marlene to his friend Nicholson. Those who said yes to, and sometimes even solicited, the photographer are too many to list… Willy Rizzo was also the discreet, and secret, confidant of a great artist, the greatest genius known to the world of fashion. Her name? Gabrielle Chanel, called Coco by her friends, by posterity, for eternity. Between her and Rizzo, amid the drab greyness of the post-war years, a constant show of fireworks was erupting. A mad friendship, like one talks about mad love, which lasted until the death of the “Grande Mademoiselle.”

Willy Rizzo died in 2013 aged 85, and left behind numerous negatives, including photo shoots at Chanel’s studio Rue Cambon, at Rue François Ier, and at the Place du Palais Bourbon, capturing, unbeknownst to his highly focused hostess, the miraculous moment when a scrap of fabric sculpted around a woman’s body becomes a marvellous garment. Chanel at work, Rizzo in his element—invisible and attentive. Chanel par Willy Rizzo is published by Éditions Minerve and, to celebrate the occasion, Studio Willy Rizzo will hold an exhibition until November 28.
