Preview

Jill Waterman is Nominated by Reviewer Lauren Schleider – Curator, Indiewalls.

New Year’s Eve is the holiday of anticipation. For the past 33 years I have photographed this annual celebration with an international scope.  Since beginning my coverage on December 31, 1983, during a three-year residence in Paris, France, I’ve journeyed from Berlin (1997) to Bethlehem (2000) and San Francisco (1991) to Salzburg (2013), among many other destinations, to capture celebrations that currently span the continents of North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

The subjects of my images are ordinary people filled with the spirit of an extraordinary night. I photograph in the streets and at private venues, often visiting a dozen or more locations. In my photographs, I seek the unraveling of a moment, the gestures and expressions found on the periphery of a standard pose. New Year’s Eve chronicles a milestone, marking an annual passage of time common to all people. For more on this project, please view the 2015 Web documentary produced by Audrey Daniels for Culture.
