Preview

Live From My Studio: The Art of Edie Baskin is the first book to showcase the work of the Emmy-nominated photographer and art director who created the signature style of Saturday Night Live. Beginning with the show’s debut in 1975, Baskin’s distinctive images introduced a bold new visual language for late-night television and celebrated some of the most influential performers of the past fifty years.

This book presents an extraordinary collection of her portraits, including iconic and rarely seen images of guests and musical acts who appeared on the show between 1975 and 2000. Baskin’s subjects include John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Steve Martin, Sting, Nicole Kidman, Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, and many others who defined the era’s comedy, music, and film. Each photograph exemplifies her unique hand-tinting technique, a process that blends photography with classical art methods to create color, texture, and storytelling within a single frame.

Edie Baskin’s hand-colored photographs appeared weekly in the show’s opening credits. Recently featured in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s SNL: 50 Years of Music exhibit, her portraits continue to be recognized as a key part of the show’s visual history. You can almost hear the cue cards rustling and the live band warming up behind each image.

Published to honor the fiftieth anniversary of Saturday Night Live, Live From My Studio offers an intimate and visually striking record of a groundbreaking career. It celebrates the creativity of a pioneering artist whose work helped define the visual identity of one of television’s most enduring cultural institutions.
