This image is taken from Michel Setboun’s third book about agencies. Eighty reporters were chosen to comment on an iconic image taken during their careers. The image we’re publishing today is a picture by Erika Larsen.
The Redux photo agency sent me to help put together a book on American youth. I was given carte blanche. I took my car and set out to take portraits of the people I met. Deep in Arizona, I came across five teenagers. They were 15 at most, and I asked if I could tag along with them for the night. Since they didn’t yet have their driver’s licenses, they took me by foot into the desert and, as the sun set, started playing guitar in the sand. The two couples seemed convinced that they would spend their lives together. But above them, the sky was filled with an unsettling light. The contrast between the confidence of the teenagers and the impending threat is striking.
