Broken Wings

Broken Wings is more than a photography series—it is an emotional journey into the hidden layers of human existence. These portraits of strangers across Moroccan streets, especially in Tetouan, reveal stories that are often overlooked: fragments of solitude, despair, tenderness, and resilience. The title emerged from my encounters with people whose lives seemed suspended between fragility and survival. Like wings once destined to soar, but fractured by time and circumstance, they continue to move, to persist, to endure. My intention is not to glorify suffering, nor to exploit vulnerability, but to dignify presence, to transform fleeting encounters into lasting reflections. Each photograph captures an anonymous individual from different social layers: vendors, workers, children, women burdened by both tradition and survival. They appear to me like open books, their faces inscribed with emotions too deep for words. Before I press the shutter, there is always a moment of recognition—a glance, a silence, a brief dialogue without language. In that instant, a fragile connection arises, one that shapes the portrait as much as light and shadow. Most of the works were created in Tetouan, though I do not live there. The city, with its narrow alleys and timeless rhythm, became the stage for my encounters. Being an outsider allows me to see its people with fresh eyes, yet I also feel a responsibility: to honor them, to ensure they are not reduced to anonymous figures fading into the crowd. As a photographer, I am not a distant observer. I recognize fragments of myself in these strangers—their brokenness, their yearning, their dignity. When I lift the camera, I do so with humility, aware that I am borrowing a piece of their existence. Photography, for me, is not about freezing reality but unveiling its hidden layers, giving voice to silence. Through Broken Wings, I hope to invite viewers into this silent dialogue. To look into these faces is to confront not only the lives of others, but also our own. These portraits mirror our shared vulnerability, our unspoken desires, our fragile humanity. In them, pain coexists with beauty, despair with hope, solitude with love. Ultimately, Broken Wings is a tribute—a visual poem dedicated to strangers whose lives deserve to be seen, acknowledged, and remembered.
