The Hulett Collection presents Alain Laboile : At The End Of The World, highlights from La Famille. Michael Hulett introduces it as follows.
Alain Laboile (b. 1968, Bordeaux) never trained as a photographer. He picked up a camera in 2004 to document his sculpture work and fell into it through a fascination with entomology and macrophotography. In 2007, at 39, he turned the lens on his own growing family, living an unconventional, barefoot life on a rural property outside Bordeaux. The resulting body of work, La Famille, became an international phenomenon: featured by the New York Times in 2012, published as the monograph À la Fin du Monde (Kehrer Verlag, 2015), and now held in the permanent collection of the Musée français de la photographie. Self-taught and still shooting his six children as they grow, Laboile captures childhood as a suspended, timeless world, equal parts tenderness, wildness, and myth.
I first learned of Alain’s work through a UK client who had just purchased several of his prints. I reached out to him, unprompted, and asked if we could work together. That was nearly five years ago. The work is just as powerful today as it was the first time I experienced it.
