Sunil Gupta –Sun City

Preview

Sunil Gupta approaches a still delicate subject in India: homosexuality. Only in 2009 did the Court of Justice decriminalize a colonial act that stated that homosexuality and the “non natural sex” were criminal acts punishable with 10 years of imprisonment.

For his exhibition, he has chosen to produce a photo-novel, Sun City, that takes place in part at Sun City, a gay sauna in Paris. “His Indian hero lives, by day, with a lover older than him; and by night he explores sexuality at Sun City”. He stages situations unimaginable in India where reserved places for homosexuals do not exist, or where kissing or holding hands is unimaginable.

Sunil Gupta was born in 1953 in New Delhi, where he lives and works.
