St Barth Photo Festival 2021 : Marco Glaviano : 50 Years in Saint Barth at the Rosewood Le Guanahani

Preview

As the sequence of extravagant opening events for the St Barth Photo Festival 2021 continues, on the evening of November 27th, the photographic works of Marco Glaviano will take center stage. Visitors are invited to view his 50 Years in St Barth exhibition at the Rosewood Le Guanahani hotel.

The series presented in 50 Years in St Barth includes soft-focus images shot on the Island where the Italian artist is a regular. Featuring black and white beachscapes filled with stunning female silhouettes, including a few of Cindy Crawford’s, the series captures the Island spirit of freedom and sophistication. The artist has been one of the first photographers to shoot in digital and the first to publish a digital picture in American Vogue in 1982. In his classical photography, digital enables him to catch body movements that convey a sense of deliverance. Except for a few experimental photomontage portraits in muted colors included in the show, the photographer prefers to use little to no post-production. Glaviano captures his subject through his lens devoid of makeup, props, or clothing, creating elegant and sensible images. His images keep the authentic and timeless feel of film photography.

The Italian photographer’s successful and expansive career has positioned him as an influential force in fashion photography. He has been credited with launching the careers of many world-famous supermodels such as Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, and Paulina Porizkova. Throughout his career, Glaviano has photographed over 500 covers and editorials for publications such as Italian Vogue, American Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, alongside thirty solo exhibitions of his works in cities around Europe and the United States.

Glaviano’s soft and classical photographs provide a new ambiance to the festival, as they capture a mood and visual aesthetic not yet seen in the series of opening exhibitions. The festival’s casual approach and exhibiting strategy of fun-loving parties offers unique access to the artists featured in a more relaxed setting, providing a glimpse of the artists and their works in an approachable and enjoyable way.
